I am the author of the only guidebook to Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. It is called “One Best Hike: Yosemite’s Half Dome” published by Wilderness Press. It is available at REI, amazon.com, and bookstores. I also have a website and daily blog dedicated to safely doing this strenuous hike.

    Regarding the Ralf Dome entries.
The best time to visit Half Dome is in June. Why? 1. The cables on the backside will have been installed by then; 2. There is longer daylight then – a return in the dark is dangerous; 3. Less chance of lightning then – most afternoon storms tend to occur in late July & August; 4.Tthe waterfalls (Vernal & Nevada) are both in full flow . Being snow melt, they will peter out as the summer progresses; 5. There are less crowds then as more families take vacations later in the summer.
I suggest wearing good hiking footwear – no sneakers of smooth soled shoes – the Half Dome granite is very smooth and you need all the traction you can get. A water filter pump is suggested for treatment – Giardia is rampant. Use hiking poles to stabilize your descent and save your knees. Leave early and be at the cables by 11:00 am or it will be a caterpillar trail. Book your accommodations early.
